Balanced Diet for Puppies
Maintaining a balanced diet for puppies is very important. Like humans and other living creatures, they need a diet made from combination of different vitamins and minerals. Balanced diet for puppies provides them with sufficient calories needed for their activities, growth and body repair.
What is a balanced diet?
A balanced diet contains correct proportions of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, mineral salts, fats, and fiber. It is also about eating foods in moderation.
As a pet owner, you need to keep a few things in mind to provide your puppy a balanced diet. First and foremost, consult a veterinarian for professional advice regarding your puppy’s diet. Each puppy is different with one another. Your puppy’s diet will greatly depend on his breed, body composition and age. Veterinarians can give you options you can choose from regarding your pet’s diet.
Make sure to feed your puppy with dry dog foods as well as some moist canned foods to help keep his teeth clean. Always select high-quality dog food that is suitable for your dog’s weight, activity level, age and size. High quality dog foods don’t necessarily mean that it has to be expensive. You don’t have to worry about the price because there are affordable dog foods which are made from high-quality ingredients. NEVER feed him with chocolate and or onions.
Determine the protein ratio needed by your pet. Their protein needs will would vary according to his age. Usually, a dog food with 20-30% protein content will help your dog achieve a healthy and balanced diet.
Avoid feeding your puppy too much. As his master, you should be able to know if he has taken enough. Be aware that obesity can also happen in puppies and may lead to serious health conditions like abnormal growth of hip joint also known as hip dyplasia. Obesity in puppies may also cause muscle and skeletal problems to your pet.
Feed your dog at least twice daily a day. This will keep his digestive system active and improve his body’s metabolism rate. It is also recommended to feed your dog with meals that contain fresh fruits and vegetables, but NOT raw potatoes. You can also mix these vegetables with meat.
Make him drink fresh and clean water. Water helps a lot in regulating the functions inside his body. It can also help cleanse his system from harmful radicals that may cause serious health problems.
Aside from the tips mentioned above, you can also include nutritional supplements in your dog’s diet. Make sure to consult a vet first before giving him any health supplements for prescription about proper dosage.
