Stud Dogs
Choosing a stud dog
After a lot of thought you have made the decision that you would like your female dog to have puppies for one reason or another but just how do you go about obtaining a male dog to 'perform' with your female?
This is where stud dogs come into play. The stud dog is basically a healthy, happy male dog who is 'employed' to mate with female dogs; his role is to sire the puppies and then move on he is not expected to play the doting father!
There are certain factors that you should consider prior to selecting a stud dog:
- Ensure that you have your female dog's pedigree for the owner of the stud dog to read.
- Make sure she is registered with the Kennel Club.
- Provide proof that her worming and all vaccinations are up to date.
- Do not breed your female dog any younger than 2 years old.
The female dog's pedigree is vital because any reputable stud dog owner will wish to look at it and ascertain that the female is compatible to their stud dog. You need to be certain that your chosen stud dog is registered with the Kennel Club; if he is not actually registered then the puppies cannot be registered either.
Ask the stud dog owner to produce all the important paperwork such as the stud dog's hip score certificate and his eye certificate; all stud dogs UK should possess the relevant information and the owners of stud dogs should not hesitate to produce the paperwork when requested. You need to check everything and be 100% certain that your chosen stud dog is completely healthy.
Request that the selected stud dog has a thyroid test administered and ensure that you see the results; asking for these tests to be carried out on the intended stud dog you will choose to mate with your female dog is not being fussy or picky it is being careful and safe.
If you happen to choose the one stud dog from all of the stud dogs that does have health problems these same health issues will prove problematic to any puppies born.
Another perplexing issue can be where to look for stud dogs UK as you have to be careful that the stud dog is actually genuine. The best place to begin is on the internet, search for reputable websites, such as Puppies for Sale and begin to search the stud dogs UK that are advertised.
When you make your initial enquiry be sure to confirm the fee and make sure that everything is put in writing, it is normal for the fee to be paid for the stud dog once the mating has happened. Stud dogs provide a 'service' so you are paying for this rather than paying for the puppies. The mating has taken place and now you should receive a stud form from the stud dog's owner, this is very important as it is your registration form for your puppies. It will also have all the relevant details contained on it for the owner of the stud dog and also the details and information regarding the actual stud dog.
Stud your dog
This article will cover the basic requirements you and your dog will need to be able to stud your dog; and points to look out for when it comes to advertising your stud dog. Prior to actually using your dog as a stud dog he must have a veterinary check up just to confirm that he is fit and in good health.
You will need to check from your dog's breeder about possible health defects. Too many people bypass the 'paperwork' side of things and then run into problems at a later date with the breeders of their stud dog's potential lady friends. This will occur because the owners/breeders of the intended female dog will wish to be thorough in their examination of your stud dog prior to allowing the mating to commence.
So although all you are probably thinking is 'I wish to stud my dog' you have to be sensible and consider all aspects of the situation.
Have your proposed stud dog checked for hip dysplasia and eye diseases as these can be inherited by the puppies; also there are certain DNA tests that can be completed. The best sources of information available for the relevant tests prior to being able to stud your dog will be either your dog's breeder or your dog's vet.
You need to be fussy as it is not just the owner of the proposed lady friend that needs to check points prior to the mating it is you too. Your dog is the stud dog and you need to ascertain that his welfare is being looked after and that the potential female dog is also in good health. Check certificates given for her hip dysplasia test and her eye examinations.
Always agree the terms and conditions, including your stud dog fees prior to the mating taking place ensure that these terms are placed into writing and that you and the female dog's owner/breeder retains a copy.
When you stud your dog for the first time you may discover that some of the owners of potential lady canine friends may only wish to pay a minimal payment mainly to cover your expenses. The problem is that the stud dog has not been a proven sire, once puppies have been born and all is well any future charges can be considerably higher.
You can obtain an appropriate fee to stud your dog UK by searching through the adverts within the range of canine magazines and newspapers. Many dog breeders will advertise their stud dogs in the doggy press. The internet is a fantastic tool for advertising your stud dog and a wonderfully reputable website is the Puppies for Sale one. You can also advertise your stud dog UK in one of the many canine related newspapers or magazines.
If you follow some basic guidelines regarding how to stud your dog and apply common sense then you should not encounter any real difficulties, just be careful and do not be afraid to ask questions about the proposed female dog. You need to know as much as possible before you actually stud your dog to her.
